Weekly Corn Market Update 08/02/24
December 2024 (Dec24) corn futures (the benchmark for 2024 corn production) finished the week lower by 6.75 cents (~1.65%), settling at $4.0325/bushel. This week's price action occurred in an 18.00-cent (~4.39%) range. The week's low was 1.50 cents below the notable down level we published last week. The weekly settlement was 6.75 cents above our notable down level.
Our corn demand index (CDI) fell 3.44% this week, significantly underperforming Dec24 corn futures. The war in Ukraine, executive branch policy, tensions with China, Federal Reserve interest rate policy, the Dollar, instability in the Middle East, the upcoming US presidential election, and the potential for tariffs remain concerns.
Dec24 corn futures remain well below a long-term downtrend channel capped by a trendline connecting the highs of April 20th, 2022, and June 21st, 2023, and initially supported by a trendline connecting the lows of July 22nd, 2022, and May 18th, 2023. We see one remaining technical level below the market at $3.99/bushel. Dec24 corn futures set a new contract low of $3.95/bushel this week. We see technical levels above the market at about $4.04, $4.14, $4.25, $4.41, $4.57, $4.73, $4.86, $5.01, $5.14, $5.25, $5.44, $5.76, $5.90, and $6.02/bushel. Weekly momentum indicators remain mostly in oversold territory. Daily momentum indicators show a mix of neutral to oversold readings. Divergences with recent price action are visible on both timeframes. Carry spreads from Dec24 to Mar25, May25, and Jul25 widened notably again on the week.
Our at-the-money model volatilities for the 2024 crop finished higher this week - with short-dated Sep24 showing considerable strength. See the charts below for more details. One compares our closing at-the-money model volatilities for this week and last. The other compares our current model volatilities with the forward volatilities they imply between consecutive expirations.
For next week's trading in Dec24 corn futures, we consider trade in the $3.8850-$4.1925 per bushel range unremarkable. Notable moves extend to the $3.6725-$4.4425 per bushel range. Price action beyond that would be extreme.
For the fall crop insurance price, we see a median of $3.9975/bushel with a mode between $3.85 and $3.90/bushel. See the crop insurance charts below for more information.
